Governor’s Charity Steer Show Raises $108,430

Ames, Iowa – The 28th annual Governor’s Charity Steer Show raised $108,430 this year for the Ronald McDonald Houses of Iowa. The money raised through the auction will benefit the Ronald McDonald Houses of Des Moines, Iowa City, and Sioux City. All of the houses are located near hospitals and provide a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill children.  The Iowa Beef Industry Council and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association sponsor the annual steer show and auction. Governor Chet Culver hosted the 2010 event that was held August 14, 2010 at the Iowa State Fair.

Since its inception in 1983, the Governor’s Charity Steer Show has raised $1,830,008 for charity. The sale capped an afternoon of activities which began when 25 steers paraded into the livestock pavilion led by Governor Culver and other celebrity showpersons competing for the title of “Judge’s Choice.”

The judge for this year’s show was Brad Hook from Humeston, Iowa.  The judge selected the steer “Grassley Works,” shown by Senator Chuck Grassley, for overall grand champion honors. Vermeer Corporation sponsored the Senator’s steer. McDonald’s Restaurants including Iowa City, Coralville, West Branch, Williamsburg and Washington purchased the steer at the auction for $3,100.  Trace Ticknor of Bridgewater owned the steer.

Cory Bailey was selected by the crowd for the title of “People’s Choice.” Bailey’s steer, “Thanks A Million,” was sponsored by the Volunteer Boards of the Iowa Ronald McDonald Houses and purchased by the Family of Cory & Bob Bailey for $3,800. Colton Tate of Renwick raised the steer.

Daren Heldt, Director of Racing for Prairie Meadows Race Track and Casino, earned the Showmanship Award. He was selected by special showmanship judge Randy Gibson of Lamoni Livestock Auction in Lamoni, Iowa. Heldt’s steer, “High Steaks,” was sponsored by Prairie Meadows Race Track and Casino and was purchased by Prairie Meadows Race Track and Casino for $7,250. Lori Dvorak of Bondurant raised the steer.

“Condition of the Steak,” a steer shown by Governor Chet Culver, earned reserve champion honors. The steer was sponsored by the Iowa Beef Industry Council and Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and purchased by McDonald’s of Des Moines & Grimes for $2,600. Lacy Stevenson of Knoxville raised the steer.

Emcees for the show were farm broadcaster Bob Quinn, WHO Radio, and Andy Petersen, WMT Radio. A special appearance from Ronald McDonald kept the show lively and delighted the crowd. The auctioneer for the sale was Phil Schooley from Bloomfield Livestock. Assisting Schooley in catching bids were ringmen Mike Sorensen and Ross Buttler of Livestock Plus, Jason Lekin of Tama Livestock Auction and Tom Rooney of The Midwest Marketer.
