Governor’s Charity Steer Show Raises $123,150.

Ames, Iowa – The 27th annual Governor’s Charity Steer Show raised $112,650 this year for the Ronald McDonald Houses of Iowa and $10,500 for the Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation. The Iowa Beef Industry Council and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association sponsor the annual steer show and auction. Governor Chet Culver hosted the 2009 event that was held August 15, 2009 at the Iowa State Fair.

Since its inception in 1983, the Governor’s Charity Steer Show has raised $1,721,578 for charity. The sale capped an afternoon of activities which began when 25 steers paraded into the livestock pavilion led by Governor Culver and other celebrity showpersons competing for the title of “Judge’s Choice.”

The $112,650 raised through the auction will benefit the Ronald McDonald Houses of Des Moines, Iowa City, and Sioux City. All of the houses are located near hospitals and provide a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill children.  The $10,500 raised from the sale of “Fair Game”, a steer sponsored by Cyclone Trace Cattle Company and purchased by Hagie Manufacturing will go to the Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation.  This money will be used to make improvements to the fairgrounds.

The judge for this year’s show was Phil Core from Pleasantville, Iowa.  The judge selected the steer “Buck,” shown by Mark Pearson, WHO Radio – The Big Show, for overall grand champion honors. The Iowa Bankers Association sponsored Mark’s steer. Featherlite Coaches purchased the steer at the auction for $5,000.  James McCain of Malcom owned the steer.

Lindsey Ahrenholtz, Miss Rodeo Iowa, was selected by the crowd for the title of “People’s Choice.” Ahrenholtz’s steer, “Boogie,” was sponsored by the Northwest Iowa Cattlemen’s Associations and purchased by Central States Cattle Co. for $2,300.  Kelly Landman of Hull raised the steer.

Don Greiman, Iowa State Fair Board member, earned the Showmanship Award. He was selected by special showmanship judge Tom Frey of Creston Livestock Auction in Creston, Iowa. Greiman’s steer, “Zero Waste,” was sponsored by Artistic Waste and was purchased by Cookies Food Products for $2,100. Dakota Beenken of Buckingham raised the steer.

“Rico Suave’,” a steer shown by Sara Kelley, Morning Meteorologist for ABC 5, earned reserve champion honors. The steer was sponsored by the Cass County Beef Producers, R & B Feeds and Tibken Show Steers and purchased by United Suppliers, Purple Bound Feeds and Cass County Beef Producer Supporters for $10,000.  Morgan McDermott of Atlantic raised the steer.

Emcees for the show were farm broadcaster Bob Quinn, WHO Radio, and Andy Petersen, WMT Radio. A special appearance from Ronald McDonald kept the show lively and delighted the crowd. The auctioneer for the sale was Phil Schooley from Bloomfield Livestock. Assisting Schooley in catching bids were ringmen Mike Sorensen of Livestock Plus, Jason Lekin of Tama Livestock Auction, Tom Rooney of The Midwest Marketer and Ross Butler.
