URBANDALE, IA – More than 2,500 runners participated in the 39th annual Road-O-Cross (Living History Farms) Race held at Living History Farms in Urbandale on Saturday, November 18, 2017. The 7 mile off-road race took runners through creek crossings and other obstacles on the cold November morning. At the conclusion of the race, participants enjoyed warm beef stew provided and served by the Iowa Beef Industry Council.

“Beef is an excellent source of protein, which is especially important for muscle recovery after physical activities such as the Road-O-Cross race,” comments Rochelle Gilman, Director of Nutrition and Health Promotions for the Iowa Beef Industry Council.

The beef checkoff provided about 500 pounds of beef used in the beef stew prepared by the Iowa Machine Shed restaurant. Runners refueled after the race with beef that provides high-quality protein needed to build, maintain and repair muscles.

The race participants engaged with local cattle farmers and their families as they served the beef stew.

“This event provided the opportunity to promote beef, Iowa’s beef industry, as well as beef’s nutritional value to the race participants and spectators,” noted Brooke German, Director of Marketing for the Iowa Beef Industry Council. “It is a great partnership with the Iowa Machine Shed to bring together beef industry members and race runners at the conclusion of the race.”

Beef stew was served by more than 40 volunteers that included cattle farmers, Dallas County 4-H members, Madison County Youth Beef Team members, and Mid Iowa Youth Beef Team. Proceeds from the race support the Living History Farms. Funding for the program was provided by the Beef Checkoff Program through the Iowa Beef Industry Council.
