Beef Sustainability Presentation at Iowa Dietitian Annual Meeting

Dr. Sara Place, Sr. Director Sustainable Beef Production Research at National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, a contractor to the Beef Checkoff Program, presented on, “Beef’s Role in a Sustainable Food System,” to registered dietitians at the Iowa Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics annual meeting. 

The Iowa Beef Industry Council sponsored a speaker for the Iowa Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics annual meeting, held on November 8th, in West Des Moines, Iowa.  Sara Place, Ph.D, Sr. Director Sustainable Beef Production Research at National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, a contractor to the Beef Checkoff Program, presented on, “Beef’s Role in a Sustainable Food System.”    

Two hundred seventy registered dietitians from across the state of Iowa attended the two-day conference and heard Dr. Place cover issues including the environmental impact of US beef production, how cattle upcycle protein and how livestock make use of land unsuitable for crop production.  Place stated during her presentation, “Cattle are sustainably adding to the bounty that exists on humanity’s collective dinner table. Cattle are mobile, self-replicating, solar energy-powered beings that provide the original plant-based meat to humans—beef.” 

In addition, the Iowa Beef Industry Council along with Iowa Pork Producer’s Association, Midwest Dairy Association, Iowa Corn Promotion Board and Iowa Soybean Association participated in a farmer panel discussion following showing of the film, “Food Evolution.”   Laura Blomme, beef farmer from Vinton, Iowa, participated in the farmer panel and answered audience questions concerning beef.   

Dietitians in attendance also received beef recipes and nutrition information on Beef Choices at the Iowa Beef Council exhibit. “The purpose of the beef checkoff’s outreach to health professionals is to provide nutrition influencers, like registered dietitians, science-based information about beef production and the health benefits of beef,” said Rochelle Gilman, RD, Director of Nutrition and Health Promotions.  “Registered dietitians influence beef’s image as a healthful food by making positive recommendations regarding beef’s role in a healthful diet to consumers and media.”
